mymall is no mall

mymall.sg - blared Mediacorp over TV in the last week or so. It tells you to login (and shop?). Well, I logged in, and it asks me for a keyword as seen on TV.

Heck, I didn't see any keyword on the advertisements on TV, so I tried 'ipod'. No, mymall.sg says they that is not the right keyword. I tried other common words - the same problem. For the life of me I cannot remember that there was any keyword on those TV commercials. And there is simply nothing else you can do on mymall.sg, unless you know the keyword.

Give this 'mall' a miss. Your neighbourhood mamak stall will be more interesting.

Nope, just tried those words, mymall says it doesn't know those words.

Tried 'Samsung', 'Toyota', 'Ikea', 'Courts', etc. NONE of these work. This site is turning out to be more of a 'Guess the word' game and not what I thought it was - an online shopping mall. If this is so, then the game isn't fun. In fact, it is a bloody waste of time, and an embarrassment to Singapore website development 'expertise'.

Well, mymall.sg's TV ads just refuse to go away. Last night, the TV ads came on again. This time, I paid careful attention to the keyword and came away remembering two of the three that were flashed on screen.

I duly went to mymall.sg, keyed in 'OSIM' and 'royalumbrella'. Initially, nothing appeared, but that was because of the windows popup problem. I fixed that and wallah, the one-page ads were displayed. Great, at least after so many days and so many ads, I get the messages from the advertisers. It has taken more than a couple of TV ads and angst to get to understand how it all works. One of the things that the TV ads assume is that the viewer has his/her PC switched on while watching TV, which is highly unlikely.

But one thing it did do was to make me take notice and want to interact with the messages. I suppose it has succeeded here, though I am not sure about the cost-effectiveness of this ad campaign. If you didn't make a effort to remember the keywords, you'd still be lost.

this is all a hoax to get people to watch commercials. imagine yourself waiting for the words and not noticing the amount of advertisements you need to watch so as to have a glimpse of this "keyword". This is mediacorp way of suckering viewers and advertisers to pay attention.
